If we see the contents of the S5, we come to know that BERBARIS VULGARIS is newly added plant.

If we compare S5 with other Scrofoloso group of medicines, we come to know that it is similar with S3 but little bit similarity with S2 is also seen but here BERBARIS VULGARIS has been added with 20% which is to be thought as an important remedy in S5 that’s how it differs from other Scrofoloso group of medicines. The root bark and the stem bark of BERBARIS VUL, have the same composition and posses the same medicinal properties. Berbaris is tonic, purgative and antiseptic, as a bitter stomachic tonic. It proves an excellent remedy for dyspepsia and functional derangement of the liver regulating the digestive powers. And if given in larger doses acting as a mild purgative and helps for constipation. The berbaris is used for all cases of jaundice, general debility and biliousness and diarrhea. It possesses febrifuge powers and is used as a remedy for intermittent fevers. It also forms an excellent gargle for a sore mouth. A good lotion for application to cutaneous eruptions has also been made from it.

In the Punjab the root bark is used as a diuretic and for the relief of heat and nausea. It is considered astringent, refrigerant and anti bilious. In small doses it is tonic in larger cathartic. In the form of decoction it is useful in scarlet fever and brain affections. In Baluchisthan (Pakistan) the roots are boiled in water and the decoction given both to men and cattle for intestinal injuries. It is said to be good for fever, especially high fever. The berries are official in France, they contain citric and malic acids, and posses astringent and anti scorbutic properties. They are useful in inflammatory fevers, especially typhus, also in bilious disorders and scurvy and in the form of a jelly that are very refreshing in irritability.

This unites many qualities of S2 and S8 in it. It shares the relation of the former to the liver, whilst S2 acts rather on the gall bladder hence the peculiarities of its digestive influence. As it principally influences the function of secretion of the liver and glandular tissues, it acts in those cases of digestive disorders when either the composition of the gall fluid has become abnormal or the quantity produced whether it is ever or under the normal measure remains in the system. S2 on the other hand regulates rather the discharge in to the intestine of the gall fluid, which has been already collected in the gall bladder, with regard to degree, time and quantity. For those invalids who suffer from irritation of the liver, S5 is therefore to be preferred as a digestive remedy and stomach as well, to S1 which latter heats, excites, and constipates this sort of constitution, while on the other hand S3 regulates indirectly the intestinal functions and the evacuation of the bowels as well, through its influence on the quality and quantity of the secreted glandular product of the liver.

It is particularly adapted more so than S1 for chronic disorders of the stomach and intestines, especially when attended by irritations of the liver and a tendency to constipation; further as a constitutional in the case of a rheumatic disposition, also called gouty diathesis as it causes a copious secretion of Uric Acid, through the agency of the urine, similarly to Lymphatico, and in this way prevents development into rheumatism.

It shares with S3 its relation to the skin; cutaneous and subcutaneous cellular tissues are under its influence. It is therefore the chief remedy for skin diseases, both acute as well as chronic. But still more indeed for acute eruption than S3 which latter i.e. clearly more suited to chronic cases. S5 is mostly preferred on account of its effects on the skin, for external application, e.g. for ointments, compresses, baths, to the other numbers of Scrofoloso. Within the sphere of the nervous system, the spine and the motorial ramification of the same, are namely under the influence, whilst the sensitive ramification are subject to S3. Further it is a muscle remedy.
